About

The project Prosopographia Ponti Euxini. Callatis et Odessus focuses on the analysis of the epigraphically attested population (from the first attestations and up to the 3rd century AD) coming from Callatis and Odessus, two Greek poleis located in the Black Sea area. This will result in a prosopographical work on the population of Callatis and Odessus and it will allow to further reconstruct the societies of these two cities over the centuries. The project pertains to a series of prosopographical works dedicated to the population of the Greek cities from the Black Sea and the Propontis (Prospographia Ponti Euxini – PPE) that the project leader has already started. The intention is to provide, on the long run, a complete series of prosopographical works for the Greek cities from the area.

From a scientific point of view, the importance of the project is given by the fact that it will allow us to understand at a deeper level the population and societies of Callatis and Odessus, both cities being representative for the area. The interest for such an initiative comes against a scientific background where prosopographical works, correlated to new methodologies and tools (use of databases, social network analyses) are on the rise. These two cities were chosen due to the fact that they share both commonalities and particularities with regards to their origin, and to the territorial and administrative appurtenance; aspects which studied diachronically and comparatively can bring a better understanding of the region and its historical evolution.

Objectives

The project envisages the following three main objectives. The first objective is to update the existing open access prosopographical corpus for Callatis and Odessus in the Romans 1 by 1 database, and this for the development of the second and main objective. The main objective is that of enlarging our knowledge on the population and society attested at Callatis and Odessus, from a prosopographical and ancient social history perspective. More precisely, the goal is to achieve an exhaustive prosopographical study on Callatis and Odessus’ population, then to contextualise the information at a local level, in order to reconstruct the local societies, looking among other aspects at demography, social stratification, unequal access to prestige etc. This will imply the analysis of the epigraphic evidence and the disentanglement of each individual’s prosopography – city by city. Next, the following step will imply the writing of the individual prosopographies for the attested population of each city. The structure of the prosopographical entries will be uniform, offering information not only on the person, but also the networks, family members, and specific personal information, as well as information on the inscription and its dating, and lastly bibliographic references. The structure of these being developed under the influence of reference prosopographical works, such as the Prosopographia Heracleotica and A. Avram’s Prosopographia Ponti Euxini Externa. The next important activity will focus on analysing the society attested at Callatis and Odessus. Next a section of the work will be also dedicated to comparing the evidence for the two cities. While this step is rather exploratory, it does show the parallel evolution of two important Greek cities from the area. All of the data will be interpreted and contextualized from a historical point of view.

The third objective regards dissemination as well as education. As a last objective we will focus on identifying new ways of further continuing the research.
